New Jobs Boost as Unemployment Falls
The SNP today welcomed the announcement of 50 new jobs by Jet 2 at Glasgow airport as the latest figures showed Scotland’s employment market continued to outperform the rest of the UK and that the private sector now accounts for the highest share of employment in Scotland since devolution.
Scotland is now the only part of the UK with falling unemployment and rising employment with an unemployment rate of 7.5 per cent lower than the UK average of 7.9% and an employment rate of 71.6 higher than the UK average of 70.5.
Welcoming the figures and the new jobs created today at Glasgow airport SNP MSP Derek Mackay whose constituency includes Glasgow airport said:
“Jet 2’s continued investment in Glasgow is a sign of confidence in Scotland’s economy and in the skills of our workforce and evidence of the private sector’s enthusiasm for investing in Scotland.
“For the company to announce 50 jobs after a challenging period for the aviation industry shows a continued commitment to growth and investment.
“Today’s employment figures are a positive sign but there is more to be done. No one should be complacent about unemployment.
“The Scottish Government’s opportunities for all programme will help young people seeking employment and training to ensure they have the skills needed for Scotland’s economy.
“And our new economic strategy will focus on the growth industries and key areas that will create jobs in Scotland from renewable energy to tourism to our food and drink sector.
“In contrast to the views of the IPPR that the public sector is too large in Scotland we are now seeing the private sector take a larger share of the jobs market whilst the SNP’s no compulsory redundancies policy helps to protect public sector employees against UK Government cuts.
“Scotland’s job market is performing better than the rest of the UK because of the different approach taken by the SNP Government.
"It is now time for the Tory Government to consider the successful approach in Scotland against the problems facing the jobs market in England and move to encourage investment, small businesses and growth with a “plan b” instead of continuing their draconian cuts.”
