MACKAY HAILS FALL IN NUMBER OF YOUTH CRIMES
Local SNP MSP Derek Mackay has welcomed statistics that show the number of recorded crimes committed by children and young people have fallen by 19 per cent in Strathclyde since 2009.
The annual Scottish Policing Performance Framework report also reveals the number of complaints against police decreased by 194 to 1,467 from the previous year in Strathclyde.
Commenting Mr Mackay said:
“These figures show Scotland is becoming a safer country and it is particularly encouraging to see the number of crimes involving young people has fallen.
“In Renfrewshire in particular the figures have fallen even more substantially: reported vandalism and youth disorder since 2007 has decreased by a massive 62%.
“This is an incredible figure, and proves that having a visible police presence on our streets, as well as targeted diversionary activities organised by the Renfrewshire Council and a range of partner agencies, is helping to combat youth offending. This is reflected in these statistics and the fact crime is now at a 35-year low.
“Strathclyde Police also generated a target of £23,771,000 for efficiency savings, but achieved £48,738,000; that’s almost £25million of a difference – saving more than double their target for cash releasing efficiencies in 2010-11.
“This is also an incredible figure and shows Strathclyde’s commitment to reducing spending at a time when cuts from Westminster are hitting everyone hard.
“Most importantly is the Scottish Government’s commitment in tackling the underlying problems of crime in our society – namely alcohol, which is why we are re-introducing our minimum pricing plans.
“Cheap and widely available alcohol fuels anti-social behaviour, and the SNP Government, in partnership with police and local authorities, is helping to deliver a safer Scotland.”
