Mackay Comments on Fall in the number of Firearms
Local SNP MSP, Derek Mackay, has welcomed statistics that show the number of recorded offences involving firearms in Scotland has been almost halved since the SNP came to power.
The number of offences recorded by Scotland's police forces fell by a sizeable reduction of almost half since 2006/07’s figure of 1,259 to 643 in 2010/11. Year on year the figures are substantial too; falling by 24% from 2009-10. In Strathclyde alone figures are down 14% from last year and down 33% from 2007.
Commenting Mr Mackay said:
"Year on year, the number of crimes involving guns on our streets is decreasing. We have put an extra 1000 police officers across Scotland and they deserve great credit for their commitment to get firearms out of the hands of dangerous individuals.
“These statistics reinforce that our communities are becoming safer and better protected. Recorded crime is now at its lowest level in 35 years, with violent crime and fear of crime also down.
“Guns put lives at risk and the SNP Government has delivered the message that anyone caught using them can and will be punished.
“But while there are many positive elements to these recent firearm statistics, we cannot and afford to be complacent.
“Not all crimes and offences are reported to the police for a number of reasons but the SNP Government will continue to work tirelessly with the police, our communities across Scotland, the Crown Office and the courts to ensure that everyone is doing all they can to keep record figures like this continually down.”
