Mackay visits and donates to Shoebox Appeal epicentre
Local SNP MSP Derek Mackay recently visited Blytheswood Care, a registered charity based in Hillington which provides practical help for those in need at home and abroad.
Since 1966, Blytheswood Care has led a number of appeals to help those in desperate poverty across Europe, Africa and Asia, through filled shoeboxes at Christmas, relief and development aid or social projects for young and old.
At this time of year, Blytheswood’ s annual shoebox appeal is well underway, and to help with the costs Mr Mackay has donated £200 from his councillor salary, towards transportation costs.
Last year 118,000 filled shoeboxes were sent to many countries in Eastern Europe as well as to Pakistan and in addition to this money was sent to India to produce Gift Bags which where sourced in country.
Commenting Mr Mackay said:
“These shoeboxes can bring so much joy to people of all ages. Everyday items that seem so small to us; a toothbrush with some toothpaste, a small toy, soap and warm clothing; bring great joy to thousands of people who live in extreme poverty.
“It is an on-going reminder of the desperate poverty thousands of people struggle with day by day in Europe and in Asia, and these shoeboxes can help make a difference.
