Local SNP MSP Derek Mackay has asked the people of Renfrewshire to show their support for our service men and women, both past and present at ceremonies across the County.

Mr Mackay took part in the debate last week in Parliament, which recognised the importance of Remembrance Day and reflected on the needs and aspirations of Scotland’s veteran’s community.

Mr Mackay laid wreaths on Sunday at Renfrew and Paisley, with a special ceremony at Erskine on Friday 11th November.

Commenting, Mr Mackay said;

“Remembrance Sunday is the day we traditionally put aside to remember all those who have given their lives for the peace and freedom we enjoy today and it gives every one of us, regardless of background, the opportunity to stop and think about the sacrifices made by our brave service men and women.

“I have not gone through what must be the hell of conflict, and when I lay a wreath, I do it with a great burden on my shoulders, thinking about the sacrifice that other people have made.

“It prompts us to reflect on the wars which are still ongoing around the world today and acknowledge the continuing bravery of our armed forces and the fact that they put duty before self interest so that we can live in peace and enjoy the freedoms that we sometimes take for granted.

“Although we must remember the dead, we must respect the living and deliver for those who come back and their families, because it is clear that conflict has a much wider impact than we realise.

“We have many modern-day heroes. Some of the soldiers I know have come back from conflict having done their duty and the first thing they do is organise fundraisers for local projects and charities. They serve and they are pleased to serve, then they come back and continue in their civic duty. We in the Parliament need to live up to our duty to ensure that they get all the support that they deserve.
