Local SNP MSP Derek Mackay has welcomed the news that the Olympic Torch will be passing through Kilmacolm as it travels round the UK ahead of the London Olympics. 

Commenting, Mr Mackay said:

“The Olympic Games pits the best athletes in the world against each other and provides inspiration for our young people to get involved in sport and to strive to be the best, it will be a once in a lifetime opportunity for many people to see such an inspiring event.

“A huge amount of work needs to be done to illustrate the benefits of the Olympics beyond London and this tour is part of that. The flame itself is an enduring symbol of human endeavour and the bringing together of different nations and cultures through sport. I am delighted to see that the torch will pass through Kilmacolm and I am certain that many people will turn out for what will become a historic event.

“It will be a fantastic opportunity for local people to get to carry the torch and stir up momentum ahead of the Commonwealth games in 2014.“
