Local SNP MSP Derek Mackay has hailed the SNP Government’s record in reducing crime and making the streets safer in Scotland’s communities as new figures show the Scottish Government and local authorities have maintained 1000 more police on the streets.

There are now 1,031 more police on the streets in Scotland than in 2007 and recorded crime is at a 35-year low.  Strathclyde Police current figure is 8,404 officers, a significant rise from 7,882 in 2007, an increase of 582 (up 7.4%).

Commenting Mr Mackay said:

“I am proud to say that the SNP Government in Scotland has made fighting crime a key policy and the figures clearly state that we have had some success but there is more to do.

“People in Scotland are seeing the benefit of the 1,000 additional police in their communities, which has played a key role in reducing some of the key crimes that destroy people's confidence in the safety of our streets.

“We know how important it is to have bobbies on the beat and the difference good policing can have in a community.

“The SNP's priority in policing is to maintain those additional police to make sure local communities have the police and the protection from crime that they need.

“There is however, no room for complacency and there are some areas in which we have to continue to focus our efforts, and that is precisely what we shall do."

NOTES:

Figures out today show there are 17,265 police on the beat.  This is an increase of 6.3%, or 1,031 officers from the position on March 31, 2007
